UNESCO Chair to reflect on Peace, Solidarity and Intercultural Dialogue

UNESCO has awarded our university the Chair on “Peace, Solidarity and International Dialogue”. Obtaining this Chair is part of the University Twinning and Networking Scheme Program (UNITWIN), promoted by UNESCO to create a university network that fosters cooperation and intercultural dialogue.

When awarding the Chair, UNESCO has taken into account the quality of the activities program that the University had previously submitted. This program includes several initiatives on research and divulgation that will be developed in the next four years and fall within the Sustainable Development Goals.

Some of these projects are already underway, as it is the case of a seminar on the impact of education for Peace programmes that will take place in 2018, with the support of the University for Peace, in Costa Rica, as well as the research “Contribution of the United Nations at promoting peace: past, present and future”. The University has already been working on the latter at the request of UNESCO, and a document with conclusions will be published at the beginning of 2018.

In the context of the Chair, new goals will be fostered. Among them, an interactive map about peace is expected to be created, where we will be able to see all UN projects in this field, or the digital compilation of all legal tools to promote peace and dialogue among cultures.

This UNESCO Chair will comprise an interdisciplinary team —managed by Professor Carmen Parra— with journalists, communication experts, jurists, economists, sociologists, educators and other professionals interested in educations and culture. Moreover, we have to keep in mind that the signature “UNESCO Chair” will allow the University to actively participate in networks created for the International Decade for the Rapprochement of Cultures Program.
